The village of
L’Ametlla, which is also known by the name ”La Cala” is a tourist area that emphasizes by its numerous beaches and its fishing port that has a special Mediterranean atmosphere. The bay of ”San Jorge” with its buildings in the Roman and before-Roman style is a very popular place for excursions. This style can be appraised specially in a castle of the XIII century which was also the base of the "Order of San Jorge de Alfama", the only one of Catalan origin that is known in history. During the regency of Carlos III the village was modernized and became the Fishery center of the village Perelló, Amettla became independent in the year 1891. Starting from the middle of the XIX Century up to the beginning of the XX Century the population constantly grew up to approx. 2500 inhabitants (approx. half of the today’s number of inhabitants). Between 1860 and 1870 the route of the railroad was constructed. In 1930 a economic crisis began which forced the population to emigrate towards the north and finished in the sexagenarians with the tourism improvement which also transformed the village of Ametlla completely.
